Legal Translations

About

Unlike scientific or other technical terminology, each country has its own legal terminology (based on that country's specific legal system), which can often be quite different, even from the legal terminology of another country with the same language. Therefore, a successful legal translation requires proficiency in at least five distinct areas:

  • Basic knowledge of the legal systems (both of the source language and the target language)

  • Familiarity with the relevant field/legal domain

  • Familiarity with the relevant terminology

  • Excellent knowledge of the source language

  • Proficiency in the specific legal writing style of the target language

Additionally, for the successful completion of legal translations, the professional translator must:

  • Be part linguist, part lawyer, and part researcher

  • Have the desire and ability to research and identify the legal concepts expressed in the source language of a text that may not have an equivalent in the language or legal system of the target text

  • Decode the source text and restructure it in the target text

  • Have a thorough understanding of specific legal fields and know that each legal domain requires specific translation techniques. For example, a contractual document has little in common with a will, an administrative certificate, a court decision, or a statute

  • Understand the purpose served by the translation, as this will reflect the precise approach to translating the text (terminology, phraseology, syntax, etc.)

  • Be able to successfully bridge the gap between legal systems and have a full understanding of the culture of both the source language and the target language
